What is eBay?
Think of eBay as an online auction marketplace where its users can buy and sell goods from each other online. Founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995, it has since grown to survive the dotcom bubble and expand to acquire online payment company Paypal in 2002 for $1.5 billion USD. It is widely known as one of the website pioneers of the Internet age.
Apart from its utility and function, eBay also rose to dominance for the type of auctions listed on its site. Some of these items were very controversial in nature. One such auction involved selling an unincorporated community in California called Bridgeville. It sold for $700,000.
Other odd items auctioned but not necessarily sold on eBay involved an FA/18 Hornet Fighter Plane, an old aircraft carrier, a football team and a ghost.
